How to choose an air duct cleaning company

EPA suggests getting at least three written estimates before you choose an air duct cleaner. Ask each company these ten questions, drawn from EPA and NADCA guidance, and mark how they answered. We welcome the comparison.

The ten questions

1. A written price for the whole job, before work starts

Why it matters. EPA: get a written agreement with the total cost and scope.

Clean Air Experts: Your written estimate lists everything we’ll do and the price, before we begin.

2. Cleans every part the air passes through

Why it matters. EPA: ducts, registers, air handler, blower, coil and drain pan. Skip one and it can recontaminate the rest.

Clean Air Experts: The whole system, as NADCA’s standard describes, not just the vents you can see.

3. Brushes and air whips, negative pressure and HEPA-filtered collection

Why it matters. NADCA: source removal is the accepted method. EPA: equipment that exhausts outside, or HEPA when it exhausts inside.

Clean Air Experts: Agitation tools break the buildup loose while the system stays under negative pressure, so dust is captured, not spread into your rooms.

4. Carries liability insurance, and shows you the certificate

Why it matters. If something in your home is damaged during the work, the contractor’s insurance should cover it, not yours.

Clean Air Experts: $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Ask and we’ll send the certificate.

5. Shows you the dirt, before and after

Why it matters. EPA: ask to be shown the contamination that justifies the work.

Clean Air Experts: Before-and-after photos on every job, and a step-by-step checklist our crew completes on site.

6. Protects your home while they work

Why it matters. EPA: procedures that protect you, your pets and your home.

Clean Air Experts: Shoe covers on before stepping inside; floors and furniture protected.

7. A real local company you can call back

Why it matters. NADCA: a proper website, email and phone. Be wary of door-knockers.

Clean Air Experts: Family-owned in Dallas since 2016, with a named owner and one phone number.

8. Years of strong reviews, on more than one site

Why it matters. EPA: check references to be sure other customers were satisfied.

Clean Air Experts: 5.0 from 195 reviews on HomeAdvisor and Google, and a 2025 Angi Super Service Award.

9. No pressure, and no rock-bottom coupon

Why it matters. NADCA: a respectable company won’t push you to decide on the spot.

Clean Air Experts: Take all the time you need. Your estimate is built for your home, not a teaser to get in the door.

10. Tells you honestly when something isn’t needed

Why it matters. EPA: avoid companies that sell duct cleaning as routine or make sweeping health claims.

Clean Air Experts: If your ducts don’t need cleaning yet, we’ll say so.
